Meerut tense after Rajput girl, Muslim youth commits suicide

MEERUT: Communal tension erupted in a village near Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district after a couple of different faith committed suicide.

According to media reports, the incident took place in Sardhana’s Rardhana village night after a 22-year-old Muslim youth and his Rajput girlfriend allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison.

The couple identified as Khalid, who was preparing to join the Indian Army and Tanu, a Class XI student seems to be having an affair and was spotted together by the girl’s younger brother on Thursday evening. Fearing opposition from their families, the duo consumed poison on the spot.

Tanu was rushed to a private hospital where Kamaal Khan, a doctor from the minority community referred her to a trauma center. The girl died on way to the hospital while Khalid, who belonged to the Teli community died during treatment.

After the news of demise, hundreds of people from girl’s side vandalized the doctor’s clinic and attacked his residence triggering tension in the area owing to fake information about the doctor “for not treating the girl” properly shared on social media.

The police and the administration swung into action and Rapid Action Force were deployed in the area to control the riot-like situation and continues to remain tense.

Following the incident, several Muslims families, including Khalid’s appeared to have left the village, which has 12,000 people, mostly Rajputs and about 300 are Muslims.

The family members of the doctor also afraid and is thinking to move to a new place soon.
