Meghalaya organises ‘Vegetable and Fruit Show 2017’ to promote organic farming

Shillong (Meghalaya): The horticulture department of Meghalaya recently organised ‘Vegetable and Fruit Show 2017’ in Shillong, a day-long local vegetable and fruit show, under the theme ‘Moving towards Organic Agriculture’, to promote organic farming in the state.

Meghalaya, rich with flora and fauna, is blessed with a favourable climatic condition.

Sampath Kumar, commissioner and secretary of Agriculture Department, Meghalaya told ANI, “Agriculture and Horticulture is something which will provide a sustainable employment because this is the sector which provides the basic needs of humanity. So I would really appreciated and encourage that lot and lot more people to get along into this sector and create more values.”

At the event, fifteen stalls from different parts of the East Khasi Hills district were set that showcased organically produced vegetables, fruits, flower, dairy products and other animal products.

“The department is already making some efforts to make this agriculture occupation into more remuneration by creating some system. The state government has come up with the very long term vision of making the entire state as organic,” Sampath Kumar added. (ANI)
