New Delhi: The Delhi police is yet to arrest the two alleged accused who attacked Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Ph.D student Umar Khalid ‘as a gift for Indians this Independence’.

The two accused released a WhatsApp video where they claimed the responsibility for the attack and said that they would surrender before the Police on August 17 in a village in Punjab. The two accused also cautioned the Police that they would not surrender if the Police attempts to stop them.

But now it seems that the two alleged accused have conned the Delhi Police since nobody turned up yesterday at the village as they claimed while the Delhi Police and Punjab police personnel were waiting to arrest the men in the village.

The Police is now trying to find out the exact location and medium from where the video in which the two identified themselves as Darwesh Shahpur and Naveen Dalal and claimed that the attack on Khalid was supposed to be an “Independence Day gift” to Indians was released.

The victim Khalid was allegedly attacked outside the Constitution Club of India, where he had gone to attend an event titled Khauf se Azaadi, on Monday afternoon.

The CCTV footage retrieved from the crime scene revealed a unidentified man fled the spot after attacking Khaled.

DCP Pramod Singh Kushwah (special cell) said that they could only confirm about the incident after arresting the two accused.

“After identifying the two men in the video, investigators visited their respective villages in Haryana’s Bahadurgarh. However, they were not there and their families told us that they have not returned home in a long time,” Kushwah said.
