#MeToo: Asaduddin Owaisi demands sacking of M J Akbar

HYDERABAD: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday demanded the resignation of M J Akbar from the Union Council of Minister a day after journalist Priya Ramani spoke out about the sexual harassment.

As the #MeToo campaign gathered momentum in India, at least six women journalists have accused Akbar, a former editor, of sexual harassment and inappropriate behaviour.

“Three journalists have shown to the world the real face of the cabinet minister who heads MEA & those details are horrific. I demand that PM should immediately sack this minister. We’ll wait and see if PM walks the talk,” the Hyderabad Lok Sabha MP said in a tweet.

“@mjakbar shame on you and you stood in parliament during T Talaaq Bill & spoke about Muslim women empowerment & to stop their exploitation..,” the AIMIM chief tweeted.

The government on Wednesday continued to maintain silence on the allegations of sexual misconduct against Union Minister M.J. Akbar even as the Congress sought his resignation.

On Tuesday, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj did not answer media queries about allegations concerning Akbar. As reporters persisted with their questions and asked if there will be a probe, she walked past them without giving an answer.
