LONDON: Liverpool and Egypt forward Mohamed Salah won the Football Writers’ Association’s Footballer of the Year award on Tuesday, becoming the First Player from take to the honour.
Liverpool’s official website stated that Salahbeat Manchester City and Belgium Mid fielder Kevin De Bruyne by 20 votes, with over 400 FWA members taking part, reports Efe
“Salahis the worthiest of winners. He is also the first African to receive the award and we congratulate him on a magnificent season,” FWA Chairman Patrick Barclay said on the association’s official Twitter handle.
Salah has scored 43 goals in 48 appearances in all competitions this season and spearheaded Liverpool’s push towards a potential place in the Champions League final — the Reds lead Roma 5-2 ahead of Wednesday’s semi-final second leg in Italy.
Salah made two goals and two assists in the first leg, leading Liverpoolto a 5-2 victory on April 24.
The 25-year-old, who was last month crowned the Premier League’s Players’ Player of the Year, becomes the first African winner of the FWA accolade, which has been awarded since 1948.
Earlier this month, Salah was voted Player of the Year for 2017-18 by the United Kingdom’s Professional Footballers’ Association, an award that carries a special significance as it is decided by the players themselves.
