Mumbai: A 35-year-old Muslim man was booked for pronuncing triple talaq to divorce his wife last year in July by the Sakinaka Police this Saturday.
Triple Talaq is now punishable with three years in jail under the Muslim Women Ordinance, 2018(Protection on Right on Marriage).
The complainant triple talaq victim Tabassum Imran Sayed, aged 34 a resident of Kurla, told: “I had complained to police in January, but they were not registering the case under the new ordinance. After I gave them examples of registration of similar FIRs in other districts, they registered my FIR.”
According to reports, the duo got married in May 2005 as per Muslim rituals in Uttar Pradesh and now have two sons, mid-day.com reports.
Once Imran was jobless at times and didn’t have a permanent job, he repeatedly asked her for money.
The complainant has alleged that Imran had previously demanded Rs 25 lakh in 2014 from her for buying a flat. He forced her to ask her father to which her father agreed.
But two years later Imran allegedly assaulted her in 2016 after she refused to give him money to buy a car but relentlessly borrowed and lent him Rs 1 lakh.
Things went out of control when Imran started demanding money from her to start a business. The duo started living separately since then.
The accused has been now booked under sections 498 (A), 494, 504, 506-II of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 4 of The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Ordinance, 2018.
According to the victim, “In July 2018, Imran abused me in public and said ‘talaq’ thrice and divorced me. He later married Shaikh.”
She added, “He never gave me anything in writing. He didn’t even give me ‘Iddat’ [waiting period].”
The accused, however, refutes from the allegations made against him.
