My son joined militancy after beating by security forces , says father of Pulwama suicide bomber

New Delhi: In an interview to Reuters, the father of Adil Ahmad Dar – the Jaish-e-Mohammad militant behind the worst-ever attack on security forces in Jammu and Kashmir in which 40 jawans were killed- has said that security forces were responsible for making his son a militant.

The suicide bomber, who killed 40 CRPF men, joined a militant group after having been beaten by troops three years ago.

The 20-year-old’s father said the incident, which took place when Dar was still in school, may have changed him from the simple person he once was.

“Once he was returning from school when was detained by the police and asked to rub his nose on the ground. The men forced the boy to make a circle around their jeep with his nose,” Scroll quoted his father Ghulam Hassan Dar as saying.

Ghulam, a door-to-door fabric salesman, recalled that Dar felt it was very humiliating and would remember the incident again and again, asking why they did this to him.

“We are in pain in the same way the families of the soldiers are,” he said, adding that his son had been radicalised. He said Dar was beaten up and harassed, adding that the students were accused of stone-pelting. “Since then, he wanted to join the militants.”

Both parents said they were unaware of their son’s plan to attack the convoy.

Dar did not return home from his work as a laborer on March 19 last year, Fahmeeda added. “We searched for him for three months,” she said.

“Finally we gave up efforts to bring him back home.”

Anger over the attack is growing in India, which accuses Pakistan of backing separatist militants in divided Kashmir. Pakistan denies that, saying it offers only political support to the region’s suppressed Muslim people.

Jaish, one of the most deadly groups operating in Kashmir, has been designated a terror group by the United Nations since 2001.

Ghulam Hassan Dar said he blamed politicians for his son’s death.

“They should have resolved the issue through dialogue,” he said, referring to the conflict over Indian-controlled Kashmir.

“It is they who are responsible for driving these youth into militancy. The sons of the common man die here, whether they are Indian troops or our sons.”
