New born abandoned by mother in public toilet to die

Mumbai: A baby girl, hours after her birth was allegedly left by her mother to die in a public toilet. The incident occurred at Kanjurmarg suburb in Mumbai, police said on Monday.

One day old infant got a quick medical aid and has been now kept in a child care centre, they said. A woman who went to the toilet on June 9th morning had spotted the baby crying with her face in the toilet hole, police said.

The woman pulled the baby from the toilet and alerted her own family and police control room, as per DH.

When Police reached the spot, they saw the woman holding the baby, a police official said. The infant was taken to the civic hospital who was in urgent need of the medical treatment.

“After her health improved, we took the baby to Vatsalya Trust, where she could get proper care,” Senior Police Inspector Ajinath Satpute told. Child Welfare Committee will take decisions for her welfare now, he said. Police are yet to trace the newborn’s mother.

A case has been registered against her mother under Section 315 of IPC (an act done with intent to prevent child being born alive or to cause it to die after birth) and section 317 of IPC (exposure and abandonment of child under twelve years, by parent or person having care of it), the official said.
