Owaisi’s heckling in Parliament reported using clickbait titles with communal overtones

On June 18, AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi took oath as an MP from Hyderabad constituency in the 17th Lok Sabha. The leader was greeted with chants of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’, ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Vande Mataram’ when his name was called upon during the ceremony. Owaisi responded to the sloganeering at the end of his oath with chants of ‘Jai Bheem’, ‘Jai Meem’, ‘Takbir Allahu Akbar’ and ‘Jai Hind’. A video of the said event can be watched below:

Several media organisations reported the oath-taking ceremony, however, with misleading and clickbait headlines. While the articles mentioned each of the chants raised in the Lok Sabha and Owaisi’s complete response to the sloganeering, the titles only drew a parallel between ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Allahu Akbar’.

ANI

“Owaisi replies ‘Allahu Akbar’ as MPs chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ in Lok Sabha,” is the title of the report by ANI.

Business Standard

The title of Business Standard’s article (archive) read the same as ANI since the former republished a syndicated feed of the news agency.

The Times of India

The Times of India also carried ANI’s feed thus, the title read, “Owaisi replies ‘Allahu Akbar’ as MPs chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ in Lok Sabha.”

The media outlet later updated its story and changed the title to – “Asaduddin Owaisi counters Jai Shri Ram slogans during oath in Lok Sabha.”

The Economic Times

The Economic Times uploaded a video of the oath-taking ceremony and titled the same as ANI’s story – Owaisi replies ‘Allahu Akbar’ as MPs chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ in Lok Sabha.” (archive)

Tweets by The Economic Times on the same event, however, listed all the slogans raised.

India Today

“Asaduddin Owaisi says Allahu Akbar as MPs chant Jai Shri Ram in Lok Sabha” – reads the title of India Today’s report (archive).

Aaj Tak

India Today Group’s Aaj Tak carried a Hindi report with a misleading title (archive) – “शपथ लेते वक्त लगे जय श्रीराम के नारे तो पलटकर ओवैसी बोले- अल्लाह-हू-अकबर (When Jai Shri Ram slogans were raised during oath-taking, Owaisi responded with Allahu Akbar.)”

Jansatta

The Indian Express’s Hindi counterpart Jansatta also carried a misleading title which said (archive), “शपथ ले रहे थे ओवैसी, भाजपाई लगाने लगे जय श्री राम के नारे, AIMIM नेता ने कहा- अल्‍लाह-हो-अकबर ()Owaisi was taking oath, BJP workers raised ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans, AIMIM politician said – Allahu Akbar.)”

DNA

“Watch: Asaduddin Owaisi responds with ‘Allahu Akbar’ after MPs chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’, ‘Vande Mataram’ in Lok Sabha,” – reads the title of DNA’s report.

IANS

News agency IANS posted a misleading tweet on the oath-taking ceremony.

Several slogans were raised during Owaisi’s oath-taking ceremony but cherry-picking the religious chants from each side is a false portrayal of the AIMIM leader’s response. Many of the published stories were syndicated feeds of news agencies. Media outlets carried the articles with a misleading title despite video evidence suggesting that Owaisi raised ‘Jai Bheem’ and ‘Jai Hind’ slogans along with chanting ‘Allahu Akbar’.
