New Delhi: Pakistan’s newly elected PM Imran Khan has written a letter to his Indian PM and his counterpart Modi seeking dialogues between the two countries.
The PM has also sought a meeting between the two countries Foreign Affairs Ministers, Sushma Swaraj and Shah Mehmood Qureshi, TOI reports.
According to sources, Khan’s letter was in response to Modi’s request to initiate “meaningful and constructive” engagement between the 2 countries.
PM’s step comes just after Khan had said in his victory speech that Pakistan would respond with two steps to any step taken by India for normalisation of ties.
This letter from Khan is being treated as a formal proposal ending speculations on whether the two Foreign Ministers will or will not be meeting at the UNGA and also a resumption of comprehensive bilateral dialogues between the two countries which was launched in December 2015 but could not take place due to Pathankot airbase attack.
The ruling government wants Pakistan to engage meaningful operations against terror groups targetting India. While Modi in his letter to Khan recalled his earlier phone conversation with him in which they had spoken of “their shared vision to bring peace, security and prosperity in the Indian subcontinent, in order to make it free of terror and violence and to focus on development.
After Khan received Modi’s letter last month, he tweeted: “To move forward Pakistan and India must dialogue and resolve their conflicts incl Kashmir”.
