Pakistan may not seek IMF bailout: PM Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s populist Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday said that his government may not have to approach the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for loans since it has received “positive” responses from some “friendly countries.”

According to Pakistani media reports, Khan did not name the countries that will provide assistance but said the government was consulting allies like China and a cash-rich kingdom of Saudi Arabia for financial help.

“Their response is positive. I am quite hopeful that we will not have to approach the IMF for our economic needs,” he was quoted as saying by The News while talking to a delegation of editors.

Imran Khan said that the previous governments had borrowed so much loans that the economy of the country has been badly ruined.

“Had the former government not received loans or the amount so received was utilised properly, the economy of the country would have been in a good shape,” he said.
