‘Pay Rs. 100 Crore By 5 pm Tomorrow’: NGT slams Volkswagen for not following its order

German auto major Volkswagen was slammed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Thursday for not depositing Rs 100 crore in accordance with its November 16, 2018 order.

The NGT took the sharp step and directed the company to submit the amount within 24 hours, denying it could lead to the arrest of VW’s country head and seizure of its properties.

A bench headed by NGT chairperson Adarsh Kumar Goel took strong exception to the non-compliance of its order by the automobile giant and asked it to give an undertaking that it will submit the amount by 5 PM Friday.

Justice S P Wangdi, who was also included in the bench while asking Volkswagen to submit an affidavit of compliance after deposit said, “Why have you not complied with our order when there is no stay. We will not give you any further time.”

In November last year, the green panel had directed Volkswagen to deposit an interim amount of ₹ 100 crores with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) following allegations that the company had used “cheat devices” in emission tests for its diesel vehicles.
