PICS: Cyclone ‘Vardah’ is named by Pakistan which means a ‘Red Rose’

New Delhi: The name of the cyclones in Indian Ocean Region are decided by the member countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Thailand, Myanmar, Maldives and Oman. This time the name of the cyclone ‘Vardah’ is named by Pakistan. Vardah means ‘Red Rose.’

The last cyclone ‘Nada’, that hit Chennai was the name suggested by Oman. The names are picked in the order of the names submitted by these countries. Till now Pakistan has given the names for other cyclones are Fanoos, Laila, Nilam, Titli and Bulbul.


Cyclone Vardah has already caused the death of two people and resulted in the evacuation of nearly 16,000 people from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, and it is expected to make landfall in Chennai. Heavy rains and strong winds have uprooted trees and are creating extensive damage.

The strong wind has toppled an oil tanker on the Chennai-Vijayawada highway.

Flight operations had to be suspended till 9 pm, and 87 flights had been diverted or delayed.

All schools and colleges were closed in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur, and the coastal areas of Villupuram. Many private offices had asked their staff to work from home.
