Punjab: 100 yards around educational institutions to be Tobacco Free Zones

Chandigarh (Punjab): To further tighten the noose around the neck of offenders who are bent on violating the anti-tobacco law, Punjab government on Thursday said that 100 yard area around every educational institution will be put under the yellow line, demarcating them as Tobacco Free Zone.

Yellow line Campaign was launched by Brahm Mohindra, Health, and Family Welfare Minister while kick-starting “Punjab State No Tobacco Day” which was organized at Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh.
Speaking on the occasion, Mohindra said that this year ‘Punjab State No Tobacco Day’ was observed on the theme of ‘Tobacco Breaks Heart’. A booklet on Tobacco- NCD control programme was also released in the function.

This has been initiated in all the districts of Punjab. Under this campaign, a yellow line is drawn to demarcate a tobacco-free zone.

The Health Ministry of Punjab has taken up tobacco control as a flagship program and as a result, the state has become the leading state of the country to comply with tobacco control law.

Tobacco Cessation centres have been established in all districts of the state, which provide free counselling and cessation medicines like Nicotine gums and patches to curb the use of tobacco.

The cessation services are also being provided by the dental surgeons in district hospitals.
