Rains throw traffic out of gear in Delhi

New Delhi : Delhi on Saturday witnessed heavy traffic jams with water-logging on several busy intersections leaving motorists stuck on the streets.

Several areas – Ashok Vihar, Jasola, Okhla, IIT Gate, Chelmsford Road towards Paharganj, Ring Road Sarai Kale Khan towards DND, Sarita Vihar, Defence Colony, INA, Rajghat towards ITO, Aurbindo Marg, Anand Vihar, Wazirbad – were water-logged this morning due to incessant rains.

Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory asking the motorists to avoid these stretches. According to police, about 60% of complaints received this morning pertained to water-logging.

The MeT department said that Safdarjung observatory recorded 43.4 mm of rainfall while 41.66 mm of rainfall was recorded at Palam observatory till 8.30 am. However, humidity level shot up and was recorded at 100 per cent. An official said that minimum temperature recorded was 24.6 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season’s average. The weatherman has predicted rains throughout the day which will bring down temperature further.

Maximum temperature is expected to settle at 31 degrees Celsius,” he added. Yesterday, the minimum and maximum temperature were recorded at 26 degrees and 32.7 degrees Celsius.
