Ruthless Ghana end India’s run at FIFA U-17 World Cup

New Delhi [India]: India’s run at the ongoing FIFA U-17 World Cup came to an end after receiving a 0-4 defeat from Ghana in their last Group A fixture here at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Thursday.

Defeat for the hosts ended their dreams of making the knockout stages in their first-ever FIFA competition.

Meanwhile, Ghana secured top spot in the group on goal difference and a place in the Round of 16 ahead of USA and Colombia.

Ghana scored the opening goal minutes before half time when captain Eric Ayiah struck home on the rebound after India goalkeeper Dheeraj Moirangthem parried Sadiq Ibrahim’s low cross into his path in the box.

Ayiah would go on to double Ghana’s lead seven minutes after the break, finishing first-time from Edmund Arko-Mensah’s cutback pass in the Indian box.

A pair of late goals from Richard Danso and Emmanuel Toku helped the Black Starlets secure top spot in the group.

This was India’s third consecutive defeat at the ongoing prestigious quadrennial event, after losing the first two matches against USA and Colombia.

The Starlets will now aim to aim to continue their run in the World Cup and end their 22-year trophy drought. (ANI)
