Saudi male councilors refused to sit with female colleagues

Jeddah: For the first time Saudi Arabia allowed women to participate in election process but with a restriction not to interact with male members of the Municipal Council. Earlier, the Director General of Municipal Council Affaris, Judai Al-Qahtani made it clear that no female member of Municipal Council can interact with male members.

A controversy erupted at the first meeting of the new municipal council in Jeddah recently when male councilors refused to sit at the same table with female colleagues.

According to news report in local news of Saudi Arabia, male councilors refused to sit along with two female colleagues, Lama Al-Suleiman and Rasha Hafathi when they met to elect the President and Dy. President of the council. Another controversy erupted when male councilors objected to the women having their photographs taken with them.
