SC fixes Dec 15 deadline for inclusion in Assam NRC list

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday fixes December 15 as deadline for inclusion in Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC) also allowing the claimants to submit as identification five documents, PTI reported.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi also fixed timeline for issuance of notice to claimants as January 15 and February 1 for the verification of documents.

These five documents includes: NRC of 1951, voter list of 1966, voter list of 1971, refugee registration certificate till 1971 and ration card issued till 1971.

Until now, 10 identity proof documents that can be relied upon for submitting claim for inclusion in NRC include land documents, permanent residence certificate, life insurance policy of LIC, any licence/certificate issued by any government authority, documents showing service/employment under government or PSU, bank/post office account, birth certificate issued by competent authority, educational certificate issued by board/university and record/processes of judicial or revenue court up to the midnight of 24th March 1971.

Congress MLA Debabrata Saikia said he welcomed the court’s decision. “This order has come as a huge relief for lakhs of genuine citizens,” he said.
