SC stays Uttarakhand HC’s order on banning Fatwas

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday stayed an order of Uttarakhand High Court banning religious organisations/bodies and statutory Panchayats/local Panchayats from issuing ‘fatwas’, Bar and Bench reported.

The Uttarakhand Court in August had described fatwas as illegal and unconstitutional.

According to media reports, a Bench of Justices comprises of Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta passed the stay order on an appeal filed by Islamic organisation Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind against the High Court verdict.

The prominent social and religious outfit expressed satisfaction over the ruling.
