Self immolated MDMK leader passes away

Madurai: A MDMK party leader who immolated himself in Madurai rally protest against the proposed Indian Neutrino Project succumbed to 90 percent burnt injuries on Monday morning.

The 45-year-old MDMK party youth Ravi had set himself on fire during an MDMK rally lead by Chief Vaiko on Saturday in protest against the setting up of Indian Neutrino Project in Theni.

Though Ravi was immediately rushed to Apollo hospital he could not be saved and passed on Monday morning.

According to a report, the MDMK Chief Vaiko was to begin his 10-day rally “to create awareness on the impact of the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) project on the farmlands.”

According to eyewitnesses of the incident, Ravi had reportedly doused himself with the petrol Can he had brought with himself and later torched himself with a lighter. He acted hastily near the dais but though people standing near the dais threw sand to put off the fire he still suffered 90 percent burnt injuries.

Chief Vaiko weeping in the rally for Ravi’s act said, “Mother Nature, please save that brother.”

Meanwhile, several political parties in the State stood against the Neutrino project sanctioned by the Environment Ministry, News Minute reported.
