According to police, the family dispute is said to be the reason for the suicide. Shankar is survived by his wife Vaishnavi and two daughters.

His academy is said to have produced more than 900 civil servants and other government officials since 2004 when it opened at Anna Nagar.

The news of 45-year-old Shankar committing suicide has sent shock waves among thousands of students and people who knew him.

Coming from a farming family, Shankar appeared for the UPSC exam but failed twice. However, he then started his own academy and became a guru for other IAS aspirants.

Talking about his own failures 8-years-ago, Shankar had said:

“So many people who studied with me and studied under me, have become big officials now. When I see them, I feel pride and a tinge of jealousy. But if I had succeeded, I would have just become an IAS officer. It is because I failed that I am able to create so many IAS and IPS officers. It’s on the stairs of my failure, that so many climbs to success.”
