Shutdown Engineering Colleges if less than 30% admissions take place– AICTE directive

Hyderabad: All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has issued a directive that in case 30% seats are not filled up in Engineering and Polytechnic colleges, their affiliation would be cancelled.

It is reported that this decision has been taken at a high-level meeting held in New Delhi which was attended by the VCs of universities and members of the managements of various colleges. The details of the colleges which failed to fill up less than 30% seats are being collected.

According to the report, in 2016-17, in 6472 Engineering Colleges, there were 29, 98, 298 seats available but only 15, 41, 182 seats were filled up. In this manner, almost 50% seats fell vacant. The number of colleges in which less than 30% admissions were made was nearly 1000. It is not viable to continue these colleges. It has, therefore, been decided to discontinue their affiliation.

The same system would be applicable to polytechnic colleges also. A consultative meeting would be held on 4th of next month to decide the cancellation of affiliation of such colleges.
