Sikh cop who saved Muslim youth from bhawga mob ‘gets threat calls’

NEW DELHI: Gagandeep Singh, a courageous brave Sikh police officer who shot to fame for saving a Muslim youth from from being lynched by Hindutva (Hindu extremist) mob has begun receiving death threats.

According to BBC, the Sub-Inspector, has been reportedly receiving threat calls and sent on leave. Former Supreme Court Judge Markandey Katju too tweeted about it:

A video of the incident that took place on May 22 at the famous Garjia Devi temple near Ramnagar in Uttarakhand’s Nainital district showed an agitated mob comprising right-wing outfits tried to attack 23-year-old Irfan accusing him of “love jihad” after he visited there with his 19-year-old Hindu girlfriend.

Singh, in the video is seen intervened and confronted the agitated mob all by himself. He even hugged the Muslim man tightly and kept on shielding him from the blows as they continuously tried to hit.

28-year-old Singh’s had garnered respect and affection on social media for saving the Muslim youth and his act of bravery had also earned him a reward of Rs 2,500. While some of the people criticise Mr Singh’s actions and accused him of defending “indecent behaviour”.

The local BJP politicians are angry with the inspector and publicly justified the actions of the mob.

“It’s wrong when these people (Muslim men) bring Hindu girls to our places of worship despite knowing it’s a temple and it’s pious,” BJP MLA Rakesh Nainwal is quoted as saying to BBC.

Rajkumar Thukral, another BJP MLA objected to the presence of a Muslim youth in the temple premises. Rajkumar told the ANI News Agency, “We don’t go to mosques because we don’t have the right to go there,” he added.”Then why did these men go to our temple with an intention to destroy the Hindu culture?”
