NEW DELHI: Ahead of the last Lok Sabha polls, former Union Minister and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) President Ajit Singh said that the SP-BSP-RLD alliance will play an important role on deciding the next Prime Minister of India.

In an interview to Times Of India, on Tuesday, Ajit Singh — son of late Prime Minister Chowdhary Charan Singh said, “These issues will be decided after the results on May 23. There are only 3-4 parties who are in a position to decide. And, of course, the mahagathbandhan (SP, BSP and RLD) will have an important role in choosing the PM.”

The RLD supremo insisted that he would support the general agreement on choosing Mayawati as the next Prime Minister.

When asked if he or his alliance partners are looking at formation of a non-Congress government, Singh, who once served as defence minister in UPA 2 said such a decision would only depend on the results. “The synergy between these three parties, workers and voters is incredible and unbelievable. And when we go there, the crowd is enthusiastic,” he said.

RLD would be an integral part of the grand alliance being tailored by the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the party’s primary support base is known to exist in the Jat community.

Earlier, he predicted a washout of the BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Ajit Singh started his parliamentary career by getting elected to the Lok Sabha from Baghpat in 1989 and then successfully won the seat in 1991, 1996, 1999, 2004 and 2009.

He was defeated by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Satpal Singh in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls from the same constituency.
