Sri Sri sparks controversy: Says ‘India will turn into Syria if Ram Mandir issue isn’t resolved’

Lucknow: In an already disputed agenda, Art of Living Foundation’s chief has compared his own country to an unfortunate and war-torn land, Syria. The Hindu Guru said if Babri Masjid-Ram Mandir issue is not resolved soon, India will turn into Syria.

“If Ram Mandir issue is not solved, we will have a Syria in India,” Sri Sri said in an exclusive interview with India Today TV. He had last week met with All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) member, Maulana Salman Nadwi, who had been ousted from the board for suggesting a settlement. However, Nadwi soon detached himself saying, he would wait until the Supreme Court’s order.

Sri Sri said that Muslims should “give up” their claims on Ayodhya. “Muslims should give up their claim on Ayodhya as a goodwill gesture… Ayodhya is not a place of faith for Muslims,” the 61-year-old Guru said. Adding that Islam does not allow worship at a disputed site. “We cannot make Lord Rama to be born in another place,” he said.

Ravi Shankar has been mediating in the issue by meeting with leaders and interacting with them through video conferencing.

The Syrian civil war, a multi-sided armed conflict, has been going on between President Bashar al-Assad’s government, its allies, and the many forces opposing the government for the past eight years. More than 465,000 Syrians have been so far killed, injuring over a million, and nearly 12 million people have been displaced from their homes.

The situation in Syria’s Ghouta has been intensified in the last two week, with airstrikes that have killed more than 600 Syrian people.
