There has been a rise in the number of incidents of cow vigilantism since the election of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to the Indian central government in 2014. Many parts of India witnessed mob violence based on rumours that people possessed cow meat or were smuggling cows.
In the latest incident, A 20-year-old Muslim boy, Shahrukh Khan, was allegedly beaten to death by a group of 50 villagers, who suspected him to be a cattle thief. The incident took place in UP’s Bareilly district. He along with three other men were allegedly trying to steal a buffalo from the village.
According to the farmer, he along with 3 other guys were spotted at 3 AM trying to steal a buffalo and local residents spotted them. In no time people gathered and caught Mr Khan but Luckily three other men accompanying him managed to escape, but Khan was caught by the group.
He was alive when police rescued him. However, he died during treatment at the district hospital.
An FIR has been lodged against 30 unidentified villagers under IPC section 302 (murder). A case has been registered against Khan’s accomplices and 30 unidentified villagers, based on a complaint both by the farmer and the deceased’s brother.
