Symposium on “New technologies for urban safety of mega cities” begins

Hyderabad: An international symposium on “New technologies for urban safety of mega cities” was inaugurated at IIIT here on Wednesday HMRL Managing Director NVS Reddy and Prof. Kimiro Meguro of University of Tokyo.

The symposium, which was being jointly held by IIIT and University of Tokyo for the next three days was attended by experts and students of different disciplines of Engineering & disaster management from several countries.

Inaugurating the symposium, NVS Reddy said each mega city was bigger than many countries in terms of population, skill sets and wealth and that it was absolutely essential to safeguard cities from natural and manmade disasters. Giving an overview of the innovative features of Hyderabad Metro, he explained as to how cutting edge technologies are being made use of for safety in Hyderabad Metro from natural disasters like earthquakes and fire; and manmade disasters like terrorist attacks, bomb blasts, sabotage, release of chemical and biological gases, stampede and so on. He also advised the delegates to use their technical knowledge, analyse various types of disasters and come up with actionable solutions.

Prof Kimiro Meguro explained various earthquake-proof low-cost houses and other structures that he has developed for earthquake and tsunami-prone regions through a PPT presentation. Prof Pradeep Kumar and other senior Professors of IIIT and other universities across the globe participated in the symposium.
