Tariq Mansoor becomes new AMU Vice-Chancellor

Aligarh: Tariq Mansoor, Principal of AMU Jawaharlal Nehru Medical college, becomes new AMU Vice-Chancellor. The 60-year-old will take the vice-chancellorship after Lt Gen (retd) Zameeruddin Shah will retire on May 17.

President Pranab Mukherjee appointed Tariq Mansoor out of three contending candidatures. Abu Saleh Sharif, executive director and chief scholar, US-India Policy Institute, Washington, and Shahid Jameel, CEO, Welcome Trust and DBT India Alliance were the other two candidates. Mansoor, who has been associated to AMU for 35 years when asked about the result, he said: “I do not know anything about this as I have not received an official communication or order from the government yet,” reported Indian Express.

Supreme court denied interfering in the matter when it was pointed out that Sharif and Jameel have never served as professors, which is a mandatory requirement by UGC to take up the responsibility.

An audit committee will submit its report in a month. Mansoor will have to facilitate AMU’s academic, research, financial and infrastructure audit. The audit was ordered when the ministry received complaints under Shah’s vice-chancellorship.

A show-cause notice was issued to Shah after the ministry sought President’s approval for the inquiry. The government has ordered a comprehensive audit instead of a reply to him.
