Telangana: Dalit man fined Rs 500 for offering prayers at temple

Nirmal: A Dalit man was imposed a fine of Rs 500 by Pakpatlla Village Development Committee (VDC) members on Friday for offering prayers in Grama Devatha Pochamma Thalli Temple on the outskirts of the village in the district.

B Muthyam had visited the temple last Sunday after recovering from an illness. He waited for the priest, but as he was not present, he went into the main shrine and offered his prayers.

As per a report by the Indian Express, some villagers noticed this and took the matter to the VDC. Despite Muthyam’s pleading that he had done nothing wrong, the VDC imposed the fine on Friday.

“Can’t I enter the temple, just because I am a Dalit?,” he argued. Pakpatlla Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies elected representative B Srinivas condemned the action of the VDC and demanded district administration dissolve it. Mandal police said they did not know about the matter.
