Tribal woman carries husband on shoulders as ‘punishment’ for eloping in MP

Jhabua: A tribal woman was made to carry her husband on shoulders for allegedly eloping with another tribal man as a punishment. The 32-year-old had to cover the distance of 2 km in a village of Jhabua district in Madhya Pradesh.

The incident occurred on Sunday as the woman was seen carrying her husband on shoulders in a video that surfaced. She was also beaten up by him and the other villagers, The Indian Express reported.

Police have booked six people, including her brother-in-law and father-in-law, and arrested four based on woman’s complaint, SP Mahesh Chandra Jain said on Tuesday.

As per another officer, the woman’s husband had filed a complaint that his wife had run away with a tribal man on October 28.

“We have booked six people under Sections 147 (punishment for rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the IPC,” the police officer said.
