Trump acceptance of Israeli control of Golan sparks protests

Sweida [Syria]: Thousands of Syrians gathered on Tuesday in different cities to protest against President Donald Trump’s formal recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

According to Al Jazeera, marchers carrying Syrian and Palestinian flags protested against Trump.
Trump’s Monday order drew condemnation from various countries including China.
Syria has called the move “blatant aggression”.

The leader of Hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah has also criticised the order. In a televised speech on Tuesday, Hassan Nasrallah described Trump’s move as “a crucial turning point in the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict”, which “deals a knockout punch” to peace in the region.

Israel had formally annexed the territory in 1981 after capturing the region from Syria during the six-day war in 1967. The Israeli annexation has long been decried by the world community which regards Golan Heights as an occupied territory and Israeli settlements in the region are illegal as per international law.
