Trump restores sanctions against Iran; Iranians take to street in protest

Tehran: As the Trump administration restored all sanctions lifted under the nuclear deal, thousands of Iranians rallied in Tehran on Sunday to mark the 39th anniversary of the U.S. Embassy takeover. The crowd were raising slogans like “Down with U.S.” and “Death to Israel” during the rally in the capital. According to a state TV, similar demonstrations were also held in other cities and towns. Anger and distrust of the United States are surging again in Iran.

The restoration of sanctions on Iran’s shipping, financial and energy sectors, was announced by the Trump administration on Friday. Iran is already reeling under economic crisis, leading to sporadic protests in recent months as Iranian officials have tried to downplay the sanctions and their effects.

Trump administration, however, says the sanctions are not aimed at toppling the government, but at persuading it to radically change its policies, including its support for regional militant groups and its development of long-range ballistic missiles.

While Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Khomeini portrayed the sanctions as part of a long tradition of American hostility toward the Islamic Republic.
