Trump thanks Singapore PM for hosting US-N Korea summit

Washington: United States President Donald Trump on Friday expressed his gratitude to Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for hosting the upcoming and high-stake US-North Korea summit.

President Trump held a telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Lee after the former announced on Twitter he will meet North Korean Supreme Leader Singapore on June 12, Yonhap News Agency reported.

“President Trump thanked Prime Minister Lee for his willingness to host President Trump’s June 12 meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. President Trump said that he looks forward to seeing Prime Minister Lee in Singapore soon,” the White House said in a statement.

The Trump-Kim meet marks the first time that a sitting US president will meet with a North Korean head of state.

President Trump’s Thursday announcement came after he and Vice President Mike Pence received three former American detainees who returned from North Korea on the same day.

President Trump received Kim Hak-song, Tony Kim and Kim Dong-Chul at Maryland in the US where they had reached in a helicopter.

The US president had earlier floated the idea of holding the meeting in the Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ, which separates North and South Korea.

Other places such as Mongolia and Switzerland were also considered. (ANI)
