TS govt. to make Telugu compulsory; ordinance likely to be issued

Hyderabad: The Telangana government plans to issue ordinance soon to make Telugu a compulsory language from 2018-19 for classes I to XII in all schools under different managements, including those offering Central syllabus.

According to reliable sources, a committee headed by Prof Satya Narayana, Vice Chancellor Telugu University has been formed to oversee policies, syllabus preparation and publication and preparation of books etc. the committee has sent suggestions to the government. State Education Department has compiled the manuscript and sent to state legal department for review.

Once the law department gives its nod, it will be sent to obtain the ascent of Governor E S L Narasimhan for issuing an ordinance.

However, according to sources, people studying Urdu language as their mother tongue will be exempted from studying Telugu language as a compulsory subject.
