Twitter to livestream US Democratic, Republican conventions

New York: In another move to revive its fortunes, micro-blogging site Twitter has signed a deal with the US television network CBS to stream both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions later this month.

It means that Twitter has permission to broadcast the CBSN feed — the company’s 24-hour digital news streaming service — and anyone online can watch for free even if they do not have a Twitter account, Re/Code reported on Tuesday.

The Republican National Convention is set for July 18-21 in Cleveland, Ohio, while the Democratic National Convention is set for July 25-28 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Details on how it will work — and whether Twitter gets paid — were still being discussed. A Twitter spokesperson declined to comment on deal terms, the report added.

It is known that Twitter will make money from advertising when it will stream 10 NFL games later this year and CBS is a partner for those games too.

Last week, Twitter streamed live Wimbledon coverage.

Twitter is also in talks with the NBA, Major League Soccer (MLS) and Turner for more streaming rights.
