U’khand:Women take up Taekwondo, Martial arts for self-defense

Haldwani: As the crime against women continues to rise in India, women in Uttarakhand are learning Taekwondo and Martial arts in order to protect themselves and be independent.

Former national coach of Taekwondo Kamlesh Tiwari, who is training people in the region, said that Martial arts helps to develop a sense of confidence and self-defense among women.

He further stated that in the scenario where cases of eve teasing are a normal routine, one can defend themselves in the similar circumstance, irrespective of their gender.

“Their confidence level is developing and they are building a sense of self-defence. Martial arts is something which can be applied in different phases of your life,” Tiwari said.

“Eve teasing cases are there in the society. So, we are not telling you to fight the teasers but at least you can defend yourself from any mishappening without hurting someone or getting hurt,” he added.

Shreya, who is taking the training of Taekwondo, believes that every girl should know the art form as it helps them to lead an independent life.

“I always wanted to be an independent girl and wanted to protect myself on my own as parents cannot be everywhere with you,” Shreya said.

“Girls will have to the initiative and I would like to advice each and every girl to learn this game and be independent,” she added. (ANI)
