Umar Khalid shooting: Suspect attacker caught on cam

NEW DEHLI: A CCTV grab of the unidentified gunman suspected to have opened fire JNU student activist Umar Khalid caught on Monday afternoon, was released on Tuesday.

In the CCTV installed at Vitthalbhai Patel, the suspected attacker is seen running towards Patel Marg at around 2:30 pm, the same time at which the took place incident.

Umar Khalid was attacked before an event at Constitution Club in the national capital where he was supposed to speak. Khalid escaped the attack unhurt.

Khalid was scheduled to speak at an event titled – ‘Towards a Freedom Without Fear’ organized by United Against Hate Initiative.

According to an eyewitness, who identified himself as Khalid Shafi: “One man in white shirt pushed Khalid down on ground and fired on him while he was standing at a tea stall outside the Constitution Club. The shot missed him and the gunman fled from the spot leaving behind his pistol as people standing near Khalid rushed towards him.”

The police that reached the spot, escorted Khalid out to a safer place.

Interacting with the media persons, Khalid said, “There is an atmosphere of fear in the country, and anybody who speaks against the government is threatened.”
