UN Rights Experts urge India to release Professor Saibaba

New Delhi: United Nation Rights Experts urged India to release Delhi University Professor, GN Saibaba. They cited health condition of the professor.

According to the report published in Scroll.in, Saibaba was arrested in May 2014. Police said that he had links with Maoists. In March 2017, he was sent to jail for life.

In a joint statement, the experts said, ” We are concerned about reports that Dr. Saibaba is suffering from more than 15 different health problems, some of which have potentially fatal consequences”.

The experts who issued statement are,Special Rapporteurs, Catalina Devandas, Michel Forst, Dainius Pūras and Nils Melzer.

It may be mentioned that the case was started in 2013. As per police, he is an “Urban contact” for the Maoists.

In the month of May, 2014, he was arrested. However, Bombay High Court granted him bail in 2015 on medical ground. In December 2015, he was again sent to jail. Supreme Court granted him bail in the month of April, 2016.

In March 2017, he was sentenced to imprisonment for life.
