United Nations condemns suicide bomb attacks in Afghanistan

United Nations: Ahead of World Press Freedom Day which falls on 3 May, attacks and killings of Journalists is a “direct assault on the freedom of expression” says UN top official while Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned the terrorist attacks in Afghanistan.

The recent twin suicide blasts carried out in Afghanistan killing 25 people and as many as 10 Journalists was one of the most lethal attacks on media ever since the fall of Taliban. The recent twin attacks were claimed to be carried out by the ISIS, PTI reported.

While in the third attack that was carried out near convoy in the southern province of Kandahar killed 11 children wounding 16 others including foreign and Afghan security force members in the suicide bomb attack.

Expressing outrage at the recent terrorist, UN Chief said: “The deliberate targeting of journalists in the attack highlights once again the risks media professionals face in carrying out their essential work. Those responsible for such crimes must be swiftly brought to justice,” adding the need of the hour to bring the assailants to justice.

He also expressed his deep condolences for the families that have lost their loved ones in the bomb attacks along with wishing the injured speedy recovery.

UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) Tadamichi Yamamoto said: “These attacks caused untold human suffering to Afghan families; UNAMA condemns them in the strongest possible terms.”

Adding this is as a “direct assault on the freedom of expression,” he said, “there is no justification whatsoever for such attacks. Those who have organized and enabled these attacks must be brought to justice and held to account.”
