US to file the request for Huawei CFO’s extradition

Washington: The United States is set to make a formal request for the extradition of Meng Wanzhou, Huawei’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), who was arrested in December last year in Canada at the request of Washington.

In a statement, the US Department of Justice said that it will meet a deadline next week to file the plea with Canadian authorities.

“We greatly appreciate Canada’s continuing support in our mutual efforts to enforce the rule of law,” CNN quoted US Department of Justice spokesperson Marc Raimondi as saying.

On Monday, a spokesperson from Canada’s Justice Ministry stressed that it has not received a request from the US regarding the extradition of Meng. The deadline for filing the formal request is January 30.

Meng was arrested on December 1 last year while transferring planes at Vancouver International Airport en route to Mexico from Hong Kong. She was held on alleged charges of violating the sanctions imposed by the US on Iran.

The Huawei CFO was later released on bail but is slated to face court charges on February 6.

Last week, founder of Huawei and Meng’s father Ren Zhengfei said he had faith in the judicial systems of both the US and Canada.

Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying urged the US to withdraw the request of Meng’s extradition and warned that Beijing would take action if Washington went ahead with its measures.
