US-Sudan in talks to remove Sudan from terrorism list

The US is in talks to remove Sudan from the list of states that sponsor terrorism, reports said.

The second phase of talks with the US on the issue is ongoing said Sudan today.

The US’s designation of Sudan as a state that sponsors terrorism alongside Iran, North Korea, and Syria has drastically affected Sudan.

Washington has lifted the 20-year-old trade sanctions on Sudan a year ago, but economists said foreign investments were not initiated because of the US’s designation.

“Sudan welcomes the launch of the second phase of strategic talks between the two parties … especially after the success of the first round of talks which led to the lifting of economic sanctions,” Sudan’s foreign ministry said in a statement, MEM reports.

Earlier Sudan’s listing as a state sponsoring terrorism made the nation ineligible for seeking relief and finances from lenders such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement that Washington wants Sudan to make progress on human rights, religious and press freedoms along with improving humanitarian access and expanding counter-terrorism cooperation.
