User’s should be given rights over their data: TRAI

New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Friday said that current rules for the protection of personal data of users in the telecom sector are not sufficient, PTI reported.

TRAI also suggested that the customers should be given the freedom to right to choice, consent and to be forgotten to safeguard their privacy.

The TRAI also said since the customers are owners of their data and the entities or service providers controlling, processing their information are “mere custodians and do not have primary rights over this data”.

A series of measures of “privacy, security and ownership of data in telecom networks”, should be implemented it said.

“The Right to Choice, Notice, Consent, Data Portability, and Right to be Forgotten should be conferred upon the telecommunication consumers,” adding not to the custodians TRAI said to the Department of Telecom.

It also said that in order to protect the users data, granularities in the consent mechanism should be built-in by the service providers.

“The Government should put in place a mechanism for redressal of telecommunication consumers’ grievances relating to data ownership, protection, and privacy,” Trai said.
