Wimbledon: Federer to face Lukas Lacko in second round

London: Swiss tennis star Roger Federer will look to continue his winning start to the Wimbledon campaign when he crosses swords with Solvak tennis player Lukas Lacko in the second round of the men’s singles event here on Wednesday.

The 36-year-old kicked off his third major of the season with a bang as he registered a crushing 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 win over Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic in a one-sided opening round clash.

Heading into the clash, the defending champion holds a 100% winning record against Lajovic as he won both the two matches they have played so far.

Federer, who recently won his 98th title by defeating his Canadian opponent Milos Raonic in straight sets in the finals of Stuttgart Open, has spent two consecutive weeks on the grass court in the build-up to the Wimbledon.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion had earlier started off his season on a winning note by clinching the Australian Open before he decided to skip the clay-court season for a second-straight year, including the French Open.

Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal and Noval Djokovic also entered the second round of the major tournament after defeating their respective opponents in straight sets.
In the women’s singles event, American tennis star Serena Williams advanced to the second round by beating Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus 7-5 6-3.

Meanwhile, Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova was knocked out of the tournament after slumping to a shocking 7-6, 6-7, 4-6 defeat at the hands of fellow Russian player Vitalia Diatchenko.

In other clashes of the day, twenty-one ranked Novak Djokovic will take on 19th-ranked Lucas Pouille in the second-round clash.
