Won’t tie up with SP in UP bypolls, says Mayawati

Lucknow: Though after gaining victory in UP byelections, the alliance of Samajwadi Party (SP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) would not be formed as BSP chief Mayawati on Monday by announced that her party would not contest in upcoming UP byelections.

BSP released a statement saying, “Bahujan Samaj Party will not activate its cadres in any bypoll in future, the way it did it in Gorakhpur and Phulpur,” after Mayawati met with party’s district and zonal coordinators. The announcement comes three days after BSP faced defeat in the Rajya Sabha election. losing to BJP, despite getting support from SP.

“We have taken the decision to extend ties between BSP and SP for the good of the country and its people. BJP may try as hard as it likes to instigate people against BSP and SP, but it will fail. We, and all other opposition parties will have to work together to ensure that BJP does not come back to power,” she is believed to have told the coordinators.

It was earlier reported that the SP has also planned to contest both Kairana and Noorpur bypolls with BSP support. Talking to Times of India, Akhilesh Yadav’s close aide Udaiveer Singh had said, “The party leadership is yet to take a call on Kairana and Noorpur bypolls, but we will surely contest to win.”
