Working class outrage: Country’s largest trade unions go on strike

New Delhi: Angry over government’s apathy towards workers, central trade unions, representing millions of workers to go on a nationwide strike on Thursday.

Demonstrating three-days agitation outside parliament, the trade unions will continue the strike for four months over more jobs, improved wages and pensions, reported Livemint.

There has been a widespread job loss in the aftermath of demonetisation and implementation of Goods and Service Tax (GST). These issues were also raised by the opposition in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh during party campaigning.

“The anti-people and anti-worker policies of the government at the centre are inflicting horrific miseries and hardships on the crores of common people from every walk of life. Unemployment is getting aggravated with every passing day,” the joint platform of trade unions said in a statement.

“Till mid-February, you will see hundreds of protest marches, rallies, tool-down strikes across sectors, across states and across cities,” said Amarjeet Kaur, national secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress.

A group of ministers headed by Arun Jaitley was created to decrease the friction between the government and workers. However, they have not met with the trade unions for the past two years.
