New York: Accusing that the UN Security Council only serves the interests of its five permanent members holding veto rights, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday pushed the motto, “The world is bigger than five.” The Turkish president has long advocated for reforming the structure of the Security Council.
While addressing the 73rd session of UN General Assembly, Erdogan said that UNSC is “standing idle to the oppression in other parts of the world.” The five members of the Council are US, Russia, China, France and Britain.
Erdogan said, UN is moving away “from meeting the expectations of humanity for peace and welfare” and its Security Council is only serving the interests of countries with veto rights.
Erdogan was addressing to the representatives of all 193 UN members’ states who gathered for the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly meeting, which is taking place between September 25 and October 1.
