PATNA: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday refused to implement the contentious National Register of Citizens amid intense pan-India protests against the amended Citizenship Act.
Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United) ruling the Bihar in coalition with the BJP has openly said that NRC won’t be implemented in a state.
The remark comes a day after he assured the minorities in his state in connection with the CAA that no wrong will be done to them.
Bihar is the latest entrant in the list of states that have declared that the NRC exercise will not take place within their borders.
Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, the Centre’s fiercest critic over both the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens vowed not to allow its implementation in the state.
So far, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, Punjab CM Amarinder Singh, Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath, Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel joined the chorus to openly expressed their reservation about the NRC and CAA.
Over 19 lakh people, mostly Hindus have been left out of the final list of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, which was published in August.
Some 19,06,677 people have been excluded from the final list, which names 3,11,21,004 people as Indian citizens.
The draft NRC, which was published last year, excluded names of 40,07,707 people from the document due to some discrepancies in their documents. Over 36 lakh of them applied afresh to get their names included in the final NRC.
