NRC: Assam’s Labour Commissioner takes action against Wipro

Assam: Labour Commissioner of Assam took action against information technology company, Wipro. The company had reportedly violated the Contract Labour (Regulation & Abolition) Act of 1970.

The matter reached Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Guwahati.

Contract labour licence

According to the report published in The Scroll, Wipro in collaboration with a Guwahati-based firm was responsible for digital part of NRC. However, it allegedly did not obtained contract labour licence.

It may be mentioned that the law is applicable on every orgaization with 20 or more contract employees.

Data Entry Operators

In 2014, NRC authorities had invited tenders for system integration. As per the contract, 7000 data entry operators were needed.

Later, eight operators alleged that the company is paying less than half of the salary specified by Govt.
