Odisha: Cyclone Bulbul kills 2 in Kendrapara

Kendrapara: Two people died in separate incidents here, after the cyclonic storm ‘Bulbul’ made landfall on Saturday midnight between Sagar Islands of West Bengal and Khepupara in Bangladesh, hurtling northeastwards into the neighboring country over the Sunderban delta.

One person lost his life after drowning in a water body and the other was killed after a wall collapsed on him.

Crops have been extensively damaged and a couple of makeshift houses also collapsed in the region due to speedy winds.

Efforts are on to restore power outage and road connectivity in several areas.

As many as 20 teams of Orissa State Disaster Mitigation Authority have been deployed alongside six teams of National Disaster Response Force and 226 fire service teams.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the storm has moved towards east-northeastwards with a speed of 17 kmph in the past six hours and further weakened into a cyclonic storm.

“It is very likely to move east-northeastwards across Bangladesh. It is likely to weaken into a deep depression over coastal Bangladesh and neighborhood during the next six hours and into a depression during the subsequent six hours,” the IMD stated in its All India Weather Warning Bulletin.
