Odisha: Lesbian couple threatens to commit suicide if separated

The lesbian couple in their late 20s from Odisha’s Kendrapara has threatened to commit suicide if any attempt was made to separate them.
They had filed an affidavit before a local court in Kendrapara asking permission to marry.

On January 12, both left Kendrapara to live in the Bhubaneswar. They have reportedly been living together for the last five months.

The father of one of the women has filed a complaint with the police alleging the other woman kidnapped and forced his daughter to marry her. A case under Sections 365 and 295 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered on the basis of his complaint.

One of the woman while speaking to the media said that she had not been kidnapped and her father’s allegation was false. Neither police nor our parents have any right to oppose our relationship. We will commit suicide if anybody separates us.

Police officer Ranjan Kumar Dey stated that “Both the women have been rescued from Bhubaneswar and their statements have been recorded. During the interrogation, both expressed their willingness to live together and threatened to commit suicide if any attempts were made to separate them.”
